In the last round of the 18th European Senior Chess Championship, played in Drammen, Norway from August 4th to 12th 2018, the tension and exitement lastet all the way down to the 6th hour of play in the final round. But eventually the fog lifted, and now everything is clear:
GM Simen Agdestein (NOR) won the 50+ group with 8p from 9 games, only loosing to silver medallist Conny Holst (SWE) who scored 7,5p. Peter M Gayson (ENG) had best ranking among 4 players on 6p and took the bronze.
In group 50+ Women, Germany took double through WIM Birgitte Burchardt and WFM Olga Birkholz, while Norway got a first individual senior medal for women when WFM Sylvia Johnsen managed to draw with rival WIM Anett Wagner-Michel (GER), to prevent a full podium for the Germans.
In group 65+ top seed GM Vladislav Vorotnikov (RUS) emerged from a rather slow start of the tournament with two draws in his first 3 games to end with the gold medal – ranked first among 4 players with 6,5p. A popular silver medal went to FM Askell O Karason (ISL), who achieved the IM-titel in the process. Last years winner IM Nils-Gustav Renman (SWE) took the bronze. All three medallists completed the tournament undefeated.
In group 65+ Women, GM Nona Gaprindashvili drew her last game, and allowed WGM Elena Fatalibekova (RUS) to cath up on 5,5 points, but Nonas ranking was better, and so she could claim the title. WGM Tamar Khmiadashvili (GEO) got the bronze.
So Russia and Germany got a gold and a silver each, jointly topping the very informal medal ranking ahead of Georgia and Norway with a gold and a silver each. Sweden got a silver and a bronze, Iceland a silver and England a bronze.
There were several title norm results – we will disclose a full list soon.
