Drammen Mayor Tore Opdal Hansen performs the first move for top ranked GM Simen Agdestein in Section 50+ Open. Chief Arbiter Karl-Johan Rist supervises events.

The European Senior Chess Championship is well under way after a proper opening ceremony Saturday August 4th, with Drammen Mayor Tore Opdal Hansen , Tournament Director Geir Nesheim, baroque violinist Ingrid Økland and Chief Arbiter Karl-Johan Rist as the main ingredients. At 15:09 – only 9 minutes late – the Mayor could perform GM Simen Agdesteins (NOR) first move vs his opponent, Ronny Kirpoo (SWE). E4, Old Sicilian, and in the end, top rank in 50+ Open Simen Agdestein emerged victorious. Not so in 65+ Open/Women combined, where Johannes Ludviksson (ICL) drew with top seed GM Vadislav Vorotnikov (RUS). There were a couple of other surprise results as well. All in all a good start to the Championship, which continues with round 2 Sunday Aug 5th at 3 p.m.

On Sunday Aug 5th at 10 a.m. a 4-tournament Blitz series is kicked off in the Playing hall. All ESCC18 players are eligible participants.
